SATURDAY AUGUST 1ST
PARTIALS
Start Time: 9:30am
Workshop Duration: 6 Hours + 1 Hour Lunch Break
We’ll begin the morning with introductions before joining Kasumi Hourai for a full day exploring a range of techniques, concepts, and approaches to rope.
Please note: Workshop content may be adjusted to suit the experience level and needs of participants.
Following each demonstration, participants will have the opportunity to practise the techniques shown by Kasumi.
Day 1 Content
Reducing the Risk of Accidents & Injuries
Drawing on knowledge developed alongside industry experts, this session will explore safer rope practices, including stretching, body preparation, and injury prevention methods.
Topics include:
Understanding nerve injuries and reducing risk
Recognising vasovagal responses
Prevention techniques and safer tying practices
Adapting to Individual Differences
No two bodies move or respond the same way. Even within a TK (Takate Kote), adjustments are often needed depending on flexibility, stiffness, body shape, and weight distribution.
This principle also extends to other forms and positions, including strappado-style ties.
Developing the ability to recognise and adapt to these differences is an important step toward higher-level tying. Through demonstrations and guided discussion, participants will explore both the theory and practical application behind these adjustments.
Partial Ties & Semi-Suspension
We will begin exploring partial ties and semi-suspension techniques, focusing on structure, transitions, and partner awareness.
Various Suspension Techniques
From there, we will look at a range of suspension approaches and techniques, adapted to the level and experience of the group.
Final Session – “The Mental Aspect”
The workshop will conclude with a focus on connection, rhythm, and presence within rope.
Participants will explore how synchronising with a partner’s breathing and movement can create deeper immersion and communication through tying. Using only a minimal number of ropes, the focus shifts away from complexity and toward awareness, timing, and connection with your partner.
SUNDAY AUGUST 2ND
Suspensions
Start Time: 9:30am
Workshop Duration: 6 Hours + 1 Hour Lunch Break
Day 2 will continue into more advanced concepts of suspension, aesthetics, structure, and connection through rope.
As with Day 1, workshop content may be adjusted to suit the experience level and needs of participants.
Day 2 Content
Full Suspension & Upper Body Variations
In this session will explore:
Full suspension using TK (Takate Kote)
Non-TK upper body suspensions
Unique suspension variations and transitions
Participants will continue developing understanding around structure, balance, and movement within suspension work.
Aesthetic Awareness
Beautiful rope is about far more than rope patterns alone.
Kasumi approaches tying much like selecting clothing as a gift for a partner considering what best enhances their natural beauty, energy, and presence.
This session will explore how different body types, atmospheres, and emotional approaches influence the tying process.
The Kasumi style aesthetics focus not only on rope form, but also on:
Harmony and presentation
Emotional connection
Movement and atmosphere
Japanese-inspired aesthetic philosophy
Through demonstrations and discussion, participants will gain insight into the artistic and emotional elements that shape Kasumi’s tying style.
Blending Structured & Unstructured Rope
An exploration of combining structured technique with freer, more dynamic rope movement.
These concepts are inspired by the flow, balance, and expression found within traditional Japanese art forms.
